My Self-Hosted Transcription App, Speakr, Just Got a Whole Lot Smarter

I’m excited to share some updates to my open-source transcription project, Speakr. As someone who’s passionate about making audio more accessible, I’ve been working hard to add features that make a real difference. And today, I’m thrilled to announce two new features that I think you’ll love: automatically creating downloadable calendar events from your recordings, and custom transcript export templates.

Automatically Create Downloadable Calendar Events

Imagine being able to summarize your audio recordings and automatically extract important dates and appointments. That’s exactly what Speakr can do now. When you upload your recording, Speakr uses its smarts to pick up on any meetings, deadlines, or appointments you mention. It’s clever enough to understand phrases like “next Tuesday at 8 a.m.” or “two weeks from now on Thursday” by using the recording’s date as a reference. You can then export these events as a standard calendar file (.ics) and add them straight to your Google Calendar, Outlook, or whatever you use.

This feature is a total time-saver. No more scribbling down notes or trying to remember what you discussed. With Speakr, you can focus on the conversation, not the admin tasks. And because it’s all open-source and self-hostable, you can trust that your data is secure and private.

Custom Transcript Export Templates

But that’s not all. I’ve also added a new template system, so you can format your exported transcripts exactly how you need them. This is really useful if you need a specific layout for meeting notes, video subtitles, or just a simple, clean text file. You can build your own templates using placeholders like {{speaker}} and {{text}}, and there are even filters to do things like make text uppercase or format timestamps correctly for SRT files.

For example, let’s say you’re a journalist and you need to transcribe an interview. With Speakr, you can create a custom template that includes the speaker’s name, the timestamp, and the text. You can then export the transcript in a format that’s easy to read and edit. Or, if you’re a student, you can use Speakr to transcribe lectures and create notes that are tailored to your needs.
